I just found a picture of a triptronic (paddle shifter type) transmission that subaru made.
Now wondering can that trans be modified like the AWD subaru 5 speed manuals to fit in a bug pan with the flipped diff? _________________ Sterling Kit car (VW based) Project

Yaughn the 5EAT auto transmission you are referring to is basically the same as all subie auto transmissions, both 4wd and 2wd, 4 speed and 5 speed. The 4 speed is the 4EAT which vame with the SVX. They are all basically interchangeable.
I am about to start testing the first reversed one in about a month or so. The conversion to reverse drive is the same for all these autos but is entirely different to how I did the manuals. I wil be testing with an ej20 first up to see how it goes with the power, then moving up to a turbo or 6 cyl svx motor to make sure it can take 300hp for all the svx conversions out there.
WARNING they will not fit into beetles, Kombis etc without cutting the torsion bar but fitting into a Vanagon will likely mean cutting and rewelding the floor strngthening cross member to make it all fit. _________________ Reversed gears for Subaru Transmissions

Out standing work Todd,
I just wish there was an easy way to get one into a beetle pan. A paddle shifting trans would be perfect in my car.
I have en EJ205. _________________ Sterling Kit car (VW based) Project

If you really are too lazy to use a gear lever on the tunnel you could purchase one of the paddle shift kits available for 5 speed manual boxes. There are some companies around that do them, although they are very pricey.
I guess you could fit the 5EAT into your project but you will just need to cut things up a bit more :-)
I attempted to fit a 4EAT into my Manx before I even went to the manual transmission. This gives you some idea of the size involved :

LOL
It not about lazy,...
I think a paddle shifted car is inherently more exotic. And also more technical looking.
Ill have to look up that option on the kits available. Do you have any links?
Sry I cannot view photobuket from my current web server. Dont know why. _________________ Sterling Kit car (VW based) Project

The paddle shift subaru never went in to production did it?
Lots of paddle shift cars around use a standard box with a hydraulic shift mechaism so as Todd says one of the kits would be possible, just not sure it would be beneficial.
If i wanted to be really different i'd look into fitting a motorcycle style full sequential gearbox.
That would make me smile |

So far my reading has led me to the 09 legacy GT. and the 08 outback XT. As possible donors for their manual trans.
Theres alot more to read to find out if this trans is the same or would work. It might be a waste of time in the end, but worth it, If I could get a paddle shift system for my Sterling. Im sure its a no go like Todd says, he does know what he talking about! No doubt there,...
I'm just curious how it works, and I'd like to ponder the possibilities, of a retro fit, or some other option I have yet to think of.
I have heard using Audi trans are a good source for these types of trannies. I just love how Todd got the subaru trans down to such a tiny size, and it work in the bug pan. Now if only there was a way, difficult or not, to get the shortened suby trans to be paddle shifted, that would be awesome, and perfect!!!
Now ideally, should someone ever figure out how to do this, It would be nice to know what would be the Preferred trans. So guessing Ill go for an as new of a manual trans as I can find. Just in case someone find a way. _________________ Sterling Kit car (VW based) Project

That will do you! Would work on the Subie, they have it working on all sorts of transmissions. Wow $2200 and then some for further mods. I can't see the value in it. _________________ Reversed gears for Subaru Transmissions

Yeah I agree, Although nice. Ive driven cars with actual paddles in them, an dthey include the clutching system in them too.
Its a novel attempt, Ill give them that, but Its gonna stay on my watch list, but its gonna be so far back on the rear burner Id have to go next door to check the stove. LOL _________________ Sterling Kit car (VW based) Project

It's quite do-able, you just have to be prepared to make the investment. In order to shift via paddle actuator with the subie manual transmission you need to fit it with straight cut dog gears (no synchros) ... this will allow clutchless upshifts and downshfts. You can get those gears from PPG for the subie box for around $4500.
Then get one of those paddle shift actuators and control boxes with its air shifter servos, sensors and throttle blippers to match the downshifts like in those linked kits in the above posts and you're good to go. Probably $8000 tp $9000 poorer but you could do it. _________________ Reversed gears for Subaru Transmissions

Yeah, Its a nice idea,
But for the money Id rasther buy a tube mid engine chassis.
If it were cheaper, Id be all over it. _________________ Sterling Kit car (VW based) Project
