hi all
first i would like to thank all the people who post what they have done on here, and if it works or not, i would not even be thinking of going water cooled.
i own a 72 bay (crossover) 1700cc type 4 engine
i would like it to be
1- better on fuel
2- cruise at 65-70mph loaded and up hills
3- have some heating
so was thinking of getting a adaptor plate from phil
fitting a pug 1.9dt
jag rad under bus in a box with air scoop
but things i would like to know are
what is the best car to buy as a donor car
is there any mods that will need doing to the new engine or bits that will have to be changed?
can i use early mini heater units and can i fit one in the back aswell as the front?
also in a ideal world i would have a 2.0l box but will have to make do with the 1700 box, so what sort of revs will i be doing at 70mph?
sure there will be lots more things to ask in the nexted few months as i get all the bits together ready to start work.
thanks adam
p-s anyone in the romford essex area running a pug bay?

Hi Adam,

I've got a '79 bay with a 1.9td in it from a Xantia.

It's very economical returning 40+mpg on a decent run and 30's nearly all other times.

I didn't fit it meself but i've modified most of the bits so know the conversion quite well now.

Gearing is key, mine runs a 3H T25 'box and 5spd linkage and it revs very high. Even changing the rear tyres to 215/75/15 it is still only happy cruising at 60mph or it gets too hot.

At the mo its runs a 205 rad between the chassis rails and a mini rad in the engine bay. I will be changing this at some point to the front mounted jobbie like AlexFTS who pioneered the 'fake spare wheel' on the front panel to hide the rad- this works so well it is the setup used on brand new brazilian bays.

Heating wise, i've got a polo heater with modified outlet pipework to feed the existing demist pipework and it's ok.

I'm in Derby if you're ever around this neck of the woods and fancy a gander.

ta

Dan

from comparing the engine i had in my 306 dt and the one in the van, i can see the wiring being the only major problem. You end up with less than 10 wires to get it going, and im convinced the 'ecu' in my engine bay is only a oversized relay box.

Engine mounts are simple enough to make, but difficult to make them look nice!

from the poor photo below you can see the crux of the conversion; and how the existing engine support bar is used with some angle to mate up to the pug engine mounts.

this shows the type of thing you will end up doing if using a T25 box and linkage.

Hi Adam personally I'd fit a 1.9 normally aspirated engine into a bay if running a standard gearbox , I built one fitting a Citroen XX /Peugeot 306 engine and it outperformed my pals T carravelle 2.4 diesel
