sorry no photo but if i remember correctly the early 25s have a universal joint just in front of the box, then on the front edge of the box hanging down the is a flat plate with a nylon doughnut style bush in it which the shift rod passes through allowing it to slide back and forward and rotate with inputs from the gear lever. The last part of the shift rod is a egg cup looking cup thingy which slides over the gearbox side lever this is fixed verticaly to the end of the shift rod as the rod rotates it moves the lever on the side of the box in and out and as the shift rod slides back and forth it moves the gear box lever back and fourth hope this helps?
if i was fitting a dk to a bay i would used a cable change lever box from a production car and have a pair of cables made up. the shift would be tighter and you have less chance of noise coming into the cab down the linkage _________________ 1964 rat 13 window deluxe 1Z tdi,

Cheers guys, it seem to make a bit more sense now
was a bit confused when i saw this
on the cable change front, smartdriver posted this.... http://www.cableshift.com/094/VW%20094.html
although for the money i could have just gone and got a cp box
oh well, these things are sent to test us.... _________________ '76 bay going superfly TDI |

as sven says the b4tfink photo is from a later "mid side shift" i.e. wasserboxer/diesel type van. the dk airccoled box in your photo is "nose shift" type. the dk box is very close to a cp bay box you can see how they evolved over the years as the cases gears diff etc are the same as a 091cp but the nose cone, intermediate housing and shift rails are different. i have read that its possible to swap bits (nose parts) from a faulty cp box into a good dk box to build a cheap box as the price is alot lower for a dk box. you could do your own cable change setup on the cheap just trawl the boneyard for the shifter bits and buy the cables new? wouldnt be any more than £100 would it ? _________________ 1964 rat 13 window deluxe 1Z tdi,

I really like the idea of cable change, but without seeing how the original set up works i cant get my head around how the linkage setup will need to be fabricated on the box .... _________________ '76 bay going superfly TDI |

where the original shift arm rubber ball is bin it of drill hole fix inner end of forward backward cable to arm then make bracket to hold outer cable in place using some plate, thats the forward backward cable done shift arm mounting nut remove fit m8 rose joint/ ball joint to a 90 degree bell crank fixed to side of the gearbox this pulls the shift arm in-out when bell crank rotates which is pused and pulled forward and backwards by the side-side cable as simple as that no serious a few bit of plate a small bit of fab work and a few small nylon ball joints or rose joints and the gearbox end is done if you get a shift box and lever from a factory cable change car your 90% there just need to fit your new cables to the shift box _________________ 1964 rat 13 window deluxe 1Z tdi,

so... new year, new problems ...
Shouldn't i be able to select all four forward gears with the box out of the van? Looking at the pic above i can take the lever from there ,back and it dog legs over. i can push the whole lever in towards the box but it wont find any other gears...is the syncro mesh toast? or am i a fool? _________________ '76 bay going superfly TDI |

if you grab hold of the selector lever at the side of the box if its in neutral(pushes in and out) it should spring back to be inline with 1st-2nd gate so you should be able to rock the lever forward and backwards(1st and 2nd) centre the shift lever again so it pushes in and out push it in toward the box as far as it will go then rock it backwards and forwards (3rd and 4th) the same for reverse but when its in neutral pull it out as far as it will go and rock the lever you will here the gear select it will be louder than the other gears as its a sliding mesh selection hope this helps _________________ 1964 rat 13 window deluxe 1Z tdi,
