Had a bit of a nightmare weekend on the brake front.

I thought it was all going well as I got both rear hub nuts undone. Wow these take some serious leaverage to remove. I have never used such a long scaffold pole before! Glad I looked up to find that they both remove anticlockwise or may have still been there

I bought some rear Passat discs then dismantled the rear hub assembly. All seemed to be going well after a happy half hour on the lathe turning the hubs down so that they would fit inside the rear discs. I swaped over the wheel studs for some longer ones to allow my alloys to fit and disaster struck!!

The rear discs do not fit as they are 65mm deep and foul on the drum mounting assembly. Need some with a shallower off set. Any thoughts for a suitable offset to go with the golf calipers? How forgiving are calipers on disc thickness as some VW discs seem to be 10mm thick and others 12mm. Can you mix and match?

My Mercedes alloys are also tight on the rear hub nut by a mm or so. Is there another nut size I read somewhere that one of the nut size is 30 odd mm. mine is 46mm. If not looks like I will have to nibble the edges off thee nut on the lathe as I can't be bothered to play with the wheels.

Finished painting the floor pan and chassis. Very boring but I suppose it will stop it rusting. White seems a bit mad here as there is lots of mud on the road where I live but black seemed a bit dark.

I have also had a play a converting the front discs. But with about as much sucess as the rears. Again I went for a set of Passsat discs mainly for the wheel stud spacing but on these the offest seems a bit small at 46mm as I think the original Bay ones were 82mm. So I think I need to spend some time with the brake disc catelog. Are Caravelle discs the way to go as they seem to have better offset. Not sure about the wheel stud
PCD as not checked it yet.

The splash guard is a long way off the disc. Any thoughts.

Again my wheels are not perfect as the wheel bearing covers fouls the wheel centre. Another mod on the way as not keen on spacing the wheel out by 6mm.

Alex

What front calipers did you use? I have tried golf fronts and they seem to foul the original mountings.

Any one got any picutes of front caliper brackets. is it esier to use caliper that have mountings parallel to the disc or at right angles. Any thoughts on this one without spending a fortune or converting to Porsche hubs?

Been scanning the forum but not found a good picture any good links?

Thanks all

Thanks. I will let you know how I get on.

Where did you get your air ride suspension from? Have you got any more info on it?

I got the shockwaves from airride in america. They are a good system but i would recommend the beaefier units as I have had a few problems over the years with mine. Its also a pain in the arse to have to pay the £80 postage every time you need a new piston or air bag. I plan to re do the system using conventional bags from this country, but I have plenty of other things to do first!

Yer thats right I have air over dampers on the front. The good thing about them is you can split the air bag and buy it as a replacement part, that would be fine if I didnt have to pay for postage to the usa.

At the back I have a pair of standard air bags (firerstone) but I havent fitted them yet! But watch this space as they are going on this winter!

Alex sounds a simple fit at the front. I guess these mount onto the shocker mounts. I thought these were not strong enough for the loads or have you welded in different mounts?

I will be interested to see what you do at the back.

Yer I welded in some box section to the beam,

A. because I needed to move the mount so the air bag had plenty of room and

B. It beefs it up nicely too.

It is a really simple fit once you have made up a new top mount which was one of the reasions I went for the kit. If you are interesterd in this style of airride I would suggest that you get the heavy duty ones as the ones I have ar'nt actually designed for FIS!

Unfortunatly I didnt find that out until after I had bought the shocks as recomended by koolair! After I found this out I contacted koolair and they were......we'll abit shifty about it all actually and said that they had removed all recomondations about fitting these to campers. Hhhhhhmmmmm!

Saying that I have met a few people running these with out any problems! But I suspect that they dont use there van as much as I do! lol

The other thing you will need is a tie bar. The tie bar replaces one set of torsion springs and allows the swing arms to pivot with out falling out of the beam. I got mine from red9 for a very seasionable £60.

Hope that helps?
