Ok guys i need help on gearbox ratio's and what the best route to go down for me.....
I dont really have the cash to hunt out a 091 and have it built ( would be nice if santa could put it on the list ) but i cant see it happening..
As ive got no plans on racing the bus i was wondering if just changing the ratio's on the original box could be done and if so what do i need to get???
cheers guys...... oh and it's a 76 bay with a very thirsty ej20T on a 1600 box _________________ '76 bay going superfly TDI |

With cash being an issue your easiest options is to put bigger tyres on the rear end. Bigger as in taller not wider _________________ Think......

yeah changing the ratios means a box buid - and thats where the money goes. i ended up spending about 1.6k iirc on getting a ready build box from the US, as it was easier/cheaper than sourcing stuff here then getting it rebuilt. linkey if its any use: http://www.donsbusbox.com/ _________________ '72 Ratty Bug - Subaru EJ20 Turbo motor. |

What may be of interest to you is that i recently had a quote from bears motorsport in the midlands. They quoted me £1200 for a fully built 4 speed box with similar ratios to a Legacy. Apparently 5 speed T3 boxes are no good as 5th cannot be altered. Pretty sure this was with a cable shift as well so using a stock set up may be cheaper.
My stock 4 speed is still holding up after loads of abuse. (famous last words........hope not!

hello trouble ...
Really not sure what direction to go as of yet, the missus isnt impressed by any of the figures so far .... ( been looking into the subaru box route too)
Found out the 1600 has the best fourth of all the boxes, it's the ring and pinion that's the problem . so if i can find an 1800 or preferably an 091 and change the fourth in them i should be ok.....
.....Also got a set of 17's which if they fit ( my bus is still somewhere in france at the moment ) with some big tyres should help out
Still waiting for me balaclava....... _________________ '76 bay going superfly TDI |

what about making a custom front gearbox mount and changing the shiftrod about then using a 2.0 t25 "dk" box same ratio's and diff as a 2.0litre "cp" bay box but can still be found at reasonable money i paid less than £100 for the last one i bought just a thought _________________ 1964 rat 13 window deluxe 1Z tdi,

I dream of a 4wd beetle...
I wonder how that would work. Do the older 4wd boxes support having the diff flipped? |
