Ok, first to check...
There's a timing position for the pump, after a quick googleing it looks like the Pug got the same concept as VW engines, except for the timing tools positions.
I don't know what engine you have but it seems the XUD got the cam lock position at the front side too (VW got it in the rear end of the cam shaft) and then you can easily find TDC by checking the timing holes.
There's a smaller hole in the cam belt wheel on the pump, when changing the cam belt that hole should be lined up with a hole in the bracket behind it. This is the position where the locking pin should be pushed into the holes.
If everything's correct the engine should be at 1'st TDC now with both the cam and the pump lockable.
If the cambelt has slipped one tooth or two, you will not find TDC at the timing holes. And on top of that - if the cam was the part that slipped you are out as well. The crank lock is at the flywheel and as far as I can guess your flywheel is now totally hidden, right?
In that case... Remove the glow plug on 1'st, use something to measure the TDC when you slowly rotate the engine by hand. When you are at TDC the timing holes should line up. If they don't - you have wrong position.
Second to check...
Your timing! This require at least knowledge where TDC is and what measurement the pump should have when perfectly timed. There are numerous guides out there how to do it, use Google and thee shall find.
to be honest, my engine smokes quite a bit when cold anyway so i didn't notice.
with it being a different engine too, i don't know what difference the ip being one tooth out would do.
i'm gonna convert my bay to the 2.1, cos i know its a stronger engine generally and with 110bhp just persevere - it will be worth it. _________________ '79 Bay running citroen 1.9td and phat tyres!
I had a mechanic take a look for me whilst he was visiting the neighbours, he said it looks like it's a knackered lump...
So on the strength of that I bought an entire MOT write off, but this time it's only a 1.9td. To be honest I now just want the thing on the road so a working 1.9 will do just fine.
I only need to find out how to bypass the immobiliser on the IP.

Hi , it does sound a bit strange the smoke issue , my pal had one that was smoking badly he ended up changing the engine , then on a later date pulled the head off only to find that the head gasket had gone between number one and the oil return
