hello all, i have a 1.7 diesel on its last legs! oil pressure is drifting away & the light comes on after a long journey, clicks under the dash, lights flash etc etc
& to be honest struggling up hills at 40-45mph is getting a bit silly!
i have done engine swaps before/clutch changes etc etc
i am wanting to swap to a motor that gives me a less stressed drving experiance for me & my bus!!!!
i want to do a conversion thats as simple a swap as possible preferably aslong as i collect all the bits i need a conversion i can do from 7am friday morn & have up & running ready to go by sunday 3pm
but a better engine that what is in the t25 at the moment!!
a fair few people have said the vw 1Y 1.9D for apparently for its ease of swap, fair enough i dont think its much more powerful but i've been told it has a broader range of torque, which is what ya need to drag it up the hills!!!
granted my gearbox is the crappy 5.5 ratio that tops out about 65mph with the engine screamming its nuts off but............its a re-con box!!!!
so for the moment i'll just get some big massive tyres to lower the gearing a bit
i'm after a conversion that cheap on the pocket £££ & quick to do!
any advice on the 1y conversion or an easier swap is great!
i will be doing ALL the work myself as i simply cant afford garage labour rates, i have swapped engines before but only a like for like!
any help greatly appreaciated! |

if you only have a weekend to do the swap put another standard engine back in even then unless you buy a complete motor swaping all the bits from 1 engine to the other and refitting could take you all weekend!!! even the most simple swaps like a 1y will involve a degree of modification and fabrication _________________ 1964 rat 13 window deluxe 1Z tdi,

i have a t25 crewcab
getting hold of anther 1.7 diesel in decent order is a waste of time as they are'nt out there! i cant afford a a re-con
i thought or was led to believe the 1y is the easyist to swap in as a replacement
other than the 1y or stock 1.7
what options do i have as the body is mint! as is the gearbox/suspension etc
its just the motor thats getting iffy as fook!
its suffering low oil pressure after a run! it dont smoke or anything! its just getting rattly & the light is coming on when warm! so i presume the loss of oil pressure is due to bottom end bearings/oil pump
what ya reckon people????? i have a vw audi breaker near me so a 1y is easy enough to get! |

thicker engine oil or take sump off, new shells and oil pump that would be a weekend job _________________ 1964 rat 13 window deluxe 1Z tdi,

thats a thought, shells & oil pump untill it go's properly BANG!
defo a cheaper option, i dont actually mind driving slow! & only go to about 5 vw shows or drive long distance 5-6 times a year
its a town crewcab! :O)
a question, you have the shell bearings on the con rods & the shels on the big end caps do i change them aswell,
i changed some conrod shells on a triumph straight six a while ago with good results
i presume if i wiggle the crank it should show play if they're fooked 7 not worth putting conrod shells in!!!!
to be honest a cheap solution is perfect! its my daily & i'm not going to sell it as shes rust free!
hmmmmmmmmm
i cant change the big ends can i ??? i can only change the con-rod shells??
i need to to a few jobs on it if i go the bearing swap route such as timing belt/waterpump to be on the safe side! & a few new electrical connectors!!!
let me know what ya tohughts are as i'm ready to move on it to sort it straight away! need to before the weather turns
if i get away with changing the shells & pump it would only take a day if
that!
cheers so far 13windows i wish i had folk like yaself with some knowledge here in coventry!!! |

i would suggest measuring the crankshaft bearings using plasti-gage to see if the bearing clearance is out of spec i.e. to much of a gap, you can change the big ends and mains in situ if needed by removing the sump the oil pump is only held in by 2x bolts in the sump and will need to be removed anyway to measure/swap bearings _________________ 1964 rat 13 window deluxe 1Z tdi,

wont the timing belt interfere with getting the bearings for the crank installed?
just on the other 1y / aef route, if i went the 1y / aef route its not like the later engines in the fact you dont need the key & barrel & it is'nt fly by wire its just a basic setup
from my understanding the 1y / aef i just have to swap the bits from the 1.7 to the newer 1.9 motor such as engine mounts, sump, intake/exhaust manifolds/exhaust, use a spigot bearing in the the new engine crank, use the 1.7 clutch setup
i think its just the imobiliser in the 1.9 pump 7 the wiring thats the hard bit!
i gotta work out which in the end will be the cheapest/best route as my current 1.7 needs a timing belt & water pump the newer 1.9 will need one for piece of mind
just gotta figure out the most sencible / cheapest option as finding a good 2nd hand 1.7 is'nt possible!
you know what i mean i'm sure! |

you dont need to remove the belt thats on the other side of the oil front oil seal housing
the 1y does have have a immo! but the rear of the pump can smashed off to gain access to the stop solinoid and get rid of the need to use the immo box and key. only the tdi is engine flyby wire
if your putting a new motor in your van you should be puttting a new belt on that anyway and the 1.9 belt kit will be slightly more expensive than the 1.6
most of the bits off the 1.7 will fit but the 1.9 block is taller so the exhaust etc might need a few mods plus if you get a 1y from a polo the dipstick is on the other side of the block etc _________________ 1964 rat 13 window deluxe 1Z tdi,

cheers 13windows
i'm off out now to price up new pump/bearings/timing belt etc etc for the 1.7
& also price up a 1y engine complete & timing belt kit/water pump
one other thing is the 1y dipsick OG position "if" i used that motor in the t25 obviously the engine has more of a lean so will affect the oil level reading, so would i just put the 4.5 liters of oil in it & then just shorten the dipstick untill the level is correct, that would save me having to re-drill the block would it?
i'll come back with my price on both/findings & ask for soem more advice
at present i'd prefer to go the route of swapping engine bearings on the 1.7
just to confirm the big ends are in the endcaops that hold the crank in place
the small ends are the ones in the ends of the conrods!
i have gotta pick up the later edition of hte haynes manual for the basic how on this for the diesel but i have done it before on a couple of other motors so not too phased by it!
just out of interest what route would you go yourself????? :OP my t25 is a keeper as its rust-free! suspension is good! |

just been to a breakers, they "apparently run the engines to check they are runners before taking them out!
250+vat for a 1.9d 1y motor but the lad said if i come see him on sat he'd do a cash deal! it looked fairley clean for a diesel too!
timing belt kits for both motors are £54 wether its for the 1.7 or the 1y
1.7 engine bearings are £54 & oil pump is £56
both situations are'nt 100% garenteed either so i'm humming n harrring what route to take!
what do ya think
the belts look in good order on the 1y & oil is clean no cream under the cap but obviously ya never know for sure o you? |
