I like the shower heater (AKA Calorifier) using the engine coolant, something I've been pondering.

i work on expedition landrovers and landcruiser and alot have calorfier's connected to the cooling system for on board hot water or showers i fitted one to a series 2a landrover carawagen the other month this had a pullout awning on the back that doubled up as a shower tent the heat exchanger warmed the water very quickly! within 5min from startup the water was hot enough to have a shower

didnt take any photo's as it was a work job but it was a doddle to fit i think it was from a company called "free water heating sytems" ? but i will check up on that for you. the kit was supplied by the customer so i dont know how much it cost? to fit basically the heat exchanger was connected to the heater hose before the heater matrix with a suplementary water pump inline to circulate the engine coolant even if it isnt running, the water tank supplies cold water via a inline water pump half to the cold side of the thermostatic mixer and half to the other water jacket in the heat exchanger then back to the other side of the mixer tap so when you switch the pump on you can have hot or cold water by turning the mixer up or down apart from the heat exchanger and the thermostatic mixer tap nothing else was anything special just heater hose, jubliee clips and a couple of water pumps. i belive ex-bt transit's had a heat exchanger's for hot water hand wash's in the back and alot of vw's had auxillary water pump's these could be used to build a budget kit?

13WD is correct the ex BT van ones are quite compact and are fitted in the engine bay. They are heated using an eberspacher d5w derv heater though rather than just engine coolant.

Im fitting this system to my van - ie engine preheat / calorifier / wet heating system (radiators) and blown air system - but using the petrol version of the same heater that BT used called the B5W- they are available almost new on ebay for about £250 (or less) which is decent for a heater when compared to propex which are much more limited. The other bits can be picked up from ebay too - check out the boat listings etc too.

I have fitted a similar system to my van.
If you are going to heat it from your engine coolant you will need a blender valve to bring the water down to a sensible temperature to use it.
The calorifiers are very effective and heat the 9L of water in no time at all.
I have one which also has a small immersion heater in it so I can heat water when 240V is available without running the engine.
I don't have a shower but it can be nice to have some hot water on tap. I think you would need a big pump for a decent shower but that would empty the tank very quickly.
You can just see the tank behind the seat base, which sits in the bottom part of the wardrobe.
It all runs off one pump to a mixer tap at the sink.
If you follow the pipe from the pump through the flow damper, it splits at a y piece and one half goes to the left of the blender. The other half splits again and half goes to the inlet of the tank, the other half of this then goes to the cold inlet on the tap. The hot outlet from the top of the tank then goes to the hot inlet on the right of the blender, then the blended (still very) hot warter from the bottom of the blender to the hot inlet of the mixer tap at the sink. It would have been easier to follow if I had used some blue pipe, but I only had red!
It all works very well. Reasonable flow and temperature.

David, my friend, heats the water to maximum and blend it afterwards instead. Keep bacterias away as well.
