Welcome ,
I've not personally but have seen one on the net ,
Might help if you could add which engine you were thinking of , or were you kind of wanting information before purchasing an engine

Watcha

I think there's a couple of guys on Aussies who've done them.
ISTR that the engine sits very high and you have to raise the boot floor to accomodate

It's pretty easy to fit a water cooled motor into a type three. Plenty of room in the spare wheel well for a radiator, the engine bay is mahosive and can easily fit a quad cam Subaru motor in it with no cutting of the car, slightly different tal if you go for a turbo lump but only slightly. With enough effort you can run your coolant lines through the gearbox tunnel or you can run them beneath the car.

Is your squareback a pan scrapper slammed to the road? If so then I'd reconsider going for the Subaru motor. As mentioned above the subaru is a tall engine from the engine sump to the top of inlet manifold. If you fit the engine low enough to fit below your stock engine hatch you'll need to lift the back of the car a far bit to gain some clearance for the sump. But if you leave the chassis on the floor and raise the engine and gearbox to clear you'll be stressing cv joints and forcing the gearbox oil into the nose end and starving the diff of oil.

As above Aussieveedubbers is the best place for squareback conversions that I'm aware of. Few other places for notch and fastback conversions.
