Desperately in need of some advice!
I have recently finished changing head gaskets/cambelt. Have put motor back together plugged everything in and nothing?! The engine just spins over and over but there is no spark hence not firing.
My best mates an electrician and he has tested continuity through all wires back to ecu. Only fault we have found is there is no spark from the coil although there is power to it. Now i have replaced the coil and the new coil has a slightly higher resistance through it. He seems to think that there is nothing coming from the ignitor, so i am due to replace this>

(anyone got one/fix them?
Obviously i have gone over and over and everything else is plugged in correctly and has power. So if replacing the ignitor doesn't work i am stumped. Worse still we are expecting a new addition any week now and i have no transport, so i am desperate to sort. So if anyone can advise i would be extremely grateful.
My worst fear is that my ecu is stuffed. There no power to the fault light but this occured in June whilst in Belgium back in June. Have done mega mileage since then. So isn't related to the above incident.
As i said help!!!
Thanks

Engine was aligned to TDC on piston 1 so all markings were lined up. Belt removed and replaced as was. All checks carried out as in haynes (book of lies manual). I'm 100% i have done this correctly. Although it did cross my mind it may if this belt was out it would have an effect on the crank sensor and hence would not fire.
Anyway what were you thinking may be the problem? |

Double check your fuses.
Connect Green & Black test connectors (Ign off), then turn Ign on (not to run). That'll check: pump, fan, PCV etc
Now read any error codes in the normal way.
Then post back your results. Along with year, doner etc
If it was an immob fault it would have run for a couple of seconds _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.

Fuses all ok, as i mention though my fault code reader packed up some time ago so i can't read faults. My mate is on to this at present but with not a lot of success it seems. But motor ran fine for miles like this so not linked.
I have experienced the immobiliser issues mentioned but only if i have changed the battery or similar. Have discussed this in depth with Rich in the past and i am aware of how to resolve this. 2 - 3 clicks of the key on & off normally resolves this.
I am desperately hunting around for another igniter to remove this from the equation. Obviously ideally i need to get my fault light working. Until then i am a bit stuck.
Any one else? |

12v bulb connected to bat, the other end connected to the ECU wire.
Year/Engine/donor???? as later models will tell you if it's coil pack etc on the fault code _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.

Sorry!
Subaru Legacy 2.5 Quad Cam (R reg 97)
However an odd job as loom and ancillaries are 1997.
Block & heads are 2002 onwards, with an odd ECU. All fitted by Subaru in 2004 so a proper job, but a pain to buy stuff for.
This is what the service history shows and i have been advised by a few Subaru specialist previously.
Thanks

Ok we now have the fault light/diagnostics working kind of? Connecting green connectors tests the pump, fan etc. However connecting the black just gives a constant on off flash, i.e no reading. So i'm none the wiser as such, unless there is a way of reseting it some how.
Any help on this will most likely help me to pin point the exact fault.
Thanks!

When you did the gaskets, what exactly did you do?
ie did you pull the motor or do it in situ. (I did mine in situ, all I did was disconnect the engine loom, cam, crank sensors and injectors)
Are you dead certain the cam/crank sensors are connected properly & the correct way round? That will certainly cause no spark
I'm just trying to work out what could be loose.
Doing the Green conns proves the ECU still works
The Black reads out the trouble codes
Is your battery still ok?
The only effective way of resetting mine is to disconnect the ECU overnight, I've tried the "connect blah blah, turn on Ign, depress peddle...." to no avail _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.

Engine remained in situe, no sensors touched or removed bar unplugging the loom, so everything should be as it was prior to removing heads. ECU has been off for 2 nights and plugged back in and the symptoms are the same.
With black connectors together we still have a constant on off flash. i.e No fault reading. I will hopefully pick up a new ignitor from a breaker tomorrow who thinks he has the same one in stock and see if that helps.
Thanks

Double check the cam belt mate, the crankshaft sprocket has 2 marks on it, and I lined it up to the wrong one which is on the front face of the sprocket where red X is.
Engine spun over but wouldn't fire
Checked everything, ended up taking the belt off again just to double check it and notice the 2 marks _________________ 1989 VW Magnum Multivan EZ30 |
