Hi guys,

I'm looking for some advise based on your knowledge/experiences with Subaru engines.

The engine will go in my '69 baywindow tintop. Not currently a camper but I will be fitting a new interior with TV, playstation, cooker in the back etc so lots of extra weight being added.
I also have 4 kids that are getting heavier all the time and with all the luggage on trips away makes for a heavy van at times.

Obviously I'm after more power and better cruising speed (will be happy to comfortably cruise at 65mph/70mph) so some gearbox info would be useful. Thinking of rebuilding standard box with different ratios.

Engine wise I think I need an engine with plenty of low down torque for pulling away and driving up hills.
I'd rather have driveability than all out power and decent mpg to keep running costs down.

Which of the subaru engines best meets my requirements?

I have done a search by the way but cant find the answers for my particular application!

Hope you can help!

Matt.

Hi all 3 variants would be suitable. The EJ20 2.0 litre would be easily adequate and provide the best economy, The EJ22 (fitted in my 68 bay) is a good compromise with a bit more power but a bit less fuel efficient. The EJ25 has plenty of balls but is a bit thirsty.

Ideally you should source a 6 rib 091 box because it is stronger than the 3 rib and has better cruising ratios, it is less likely to shred cogs with spirited driving. Finding a good one can be a challenge

Cheers for the speedy reply.
Do you know the mpg you are getting from yours?

if you've asked about torque and mpg you want a tdi! a stock 90bhp engine is 200nm and will do late 30's to 40's mpg in a bay on a run. my split did 41mpg on a run to cornwall last year averaging 70mph

Hi, I'm not a fan of diesels. I used to be a mechanic and didn't like the way any diesel car drove and didn't like working on them or the smell.

I'd prefer to keep the fun factor of a petrol motor tbh.

thats up to you dude Wink it might have been the case in the past that diesels were smelly, noisy and slow but times have changed thats why so many new cars sold in the uk are diesels now. a 150tdi golf mk4 has the same max torque as a golf r32 3.2 litre 24 valve petrol engine but does twice the mpg

Just noticed all your cars are diesels Grin They deffo have their place and 41mpg in a bus makes it well worth considering but I think I'm sold on the idea of going the subaru route.

Have you considered using a Subaru box with your Subaru engine? Its the correct match for the engine's power and torque characteristics and with 5 speeds gives you good take off and cruising revs. It's also much quieter than the 6 rib box. You will usually get the box as part of your front cut you would buy for the Subie engine conversion so you get the ECU and wiring loom.

Check out the options on www.subarugears.com it might be worth considering if you're looking at the whole package.

Thanks for the link I knew this had been done but had no idea they had been put into production. When you consider how expensive the 6 rib boxes can be it makes sense to buy this kit instead.

Thanks again!!!

Matt.
