Hello everyone from the wild wild west out here in colorado, us!
I've got a 72 beetle, with an engine im not happy with. It's either, turbo whats there and blow it up twice as fast, sell a kidney and build a stroker air cooled vw and have it blow up twice as fast, or merely sell all my wordly possessions and put in a subaru motor, gain heat, power, reliability, durability, and mechanical browny points.
Obviously, i've chosen the subaru. I'm not the most experienced gear head in the world, but i've done a bit of wrenching in my 22 years on the planet, and i think i can tackle this project just fine. My goal is to prep the car for the engine as completely as i can, prep the engine for the car as completely as i can, then mate the two in a short amount of time possible as to reduce down time. The beetle is my only car at the moment, and my clothes all smell like brake kleen so the gf wont let me borrow her car that often.
I've already purchased an ej22 out of a 95 legacy manual, and an ecu and harness out of what was supposedly a 96 legacy manual. I've got both the ecus in front of me (one that came with the engine that was in the same car, and the harness that was in the supposed 96 legacy) the part numbers are identical, except for the very last ink stamped number (production number? it's only off by one digit a 0 instead of a 9). I hacked the harness pretty good taking it out for various reasons, mostly an irate junkyard owner who didnt believe me when i told him what a pain in the ass it is to take the harness out of a subaru. I've got the ecu, plug to the ecu, engine harness, plugs to the engine harness, the harness the ignitor was on, the fuse box (probably dont need it, but its a nice box anyway) a collection of relays that were near the obdII connector, and the obdII connector.
I've got a radiator from an mr2 (with a hole in it, fuckin punched a hole in it being lazy and yarding on it) already mounted in the front with fans, and the spare tire area already cut out to provide some air flow.
Obviously i've got a lot of work to do, and alot of questions, so i figure i'll fire off hopefully my first easy question:
I'm trying to figure out what this ecu needs to see to run the engine correctly, and what it doesnt. For that i'll need the wiring diagram to the engine, and the pinout (and colors) coming from the ecu, and maybe a handy list of "heres what it nees, heres what it doesnt"
Well, sorry to talk (type?) your ears (eyes?) off for my first post, i'm feeling pretty upbeat after finding out these ecus are the same, and i might not have to go shell out even more money for parts so far.

Welcome
You should happily be able to find a wiring diagram for that (sounds like you have).
Are you confident about stripping the loom? If not, Kennedy do a "how to" for looms. I've not used one but read a few posts saying that they are good - basically you pin your loom to it, then cut and shut it.
Doing a loom is a dirty job. If you smoke roll-ups, roll 'em before starting - you won't manage to do so 10 mins into the job.

Aye, i'm working on pictures (read, too lazy as of yet!).
I'm pretty confident with the loom... The scary thing is its kinda chopped up in places (like, at the fire wall for instance) but i have the harness that goes to the engine, and the plug to the ecu, and i dont have any qualms about just extending cut wires or what have you.
I havent found a wiring diagram yet, it would be way helpful if i could find one. I'm a little leery of the 'diy' kits, as information is practically free, and unless theres any really really hard to find or expensive relays or parts, i can figure that out myself. Especially with my harness being cut and putting that in a special place, i dunno if im willing to drop the dough on the kit.
If i just had the pinout and wiring diagram to my 95, i could make this thing work just fine. All i have is time at this point (bank account dwindling due to recent parts purchases), and i like tearing up tape, so im all set for that.
Is there a handy resource for getting wiring diagrams? Google is a waste of time it seems for stuff this specific.

Have you seen the last post on the sticky up there ^^^^?
Find Gazman on here and look at his site _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.

Checked out his site (the one with the cars all over for the background?) the link leading to where the manual should be is dead, and in fact leads to a pretty shady p2p site, where my avg freaked out and shut my browser off because of malicious processes that were trying to run.

Oooo, I don't know what's happened there then.
Drop Gazman a PM/E-mail
I'll have a rummage, I think I might have a 95 diagram - it might be at work though _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.

Actually i just went ahead and paid subaru the 35 bucks to access their stuff, i've got 3 days to download any and everything i can possibly think of. Already got the wiring stuff (at least the locations and colors of things). Looking for the actual diagram, line wise.

So did you get the mail?
Did you look at the sticky up above? The last post shows the ECU pin outs for most of the Scooby's pre '00 _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.

Anyway, yes, i got your email, no i havent found the sticky you're referring to, and don't i have to be fairly specific year to year model to model with the pinout? I was under the impression that even with this specific plug type they moved stuff around a bit.
Also, for loom stuff, do i just go through the pinout, and cut out anything that isnt engine related? I guess im still kinda scared of it, i dont want to hack out anything thats needed, or miss something i should already know about.
