I have an EJ25 pulled from a 1998 legacy which i assumed was OBD2, on this basis i have been and got a scanguage2 for tarting around with..
Unfortunatly when i searched to plug it in today i found my loom had what i think is an OBD1 plug only (I know i shoullda checked first!!)
I have posted a pic below could anyone confirm this and also what year they did change i thought it was 94-96 albiet some cars were produced before it became compulsory.
I had my loom converted by RJES and have never questioned it was anything other than a 1998 car
Richard if you read this could you confirm what protocol my loom is (Rich Kilby btw) i am sure you will have a good idea to whats going on here
Thanks in advance

As far as I can recall I think that all US cars from 1995 will have OBDII diagnosticks fitted. European and jap cars won't have them fitted untill much later, iirc 1999> as they weren't compulsary unlike in the US.
My 1995 JDM WRX EJ20T is defo OBDI |

Thanks for the replies guys..
The 1998 ej25 i have is uk market and seems it is odb1. as i plugged the scanguage into my 2001 outback no probs (so that deffo is obd2 and a different plug with tapered sides) and tbh it dosent seem that accurate for bhp readings as i was led to believe anyway, 861hp at one point - i wish!! coolant temps and trip mode works fine though..
Im just frustrated that i routed the cable under carpet behind units etc front to back and then found out at point of plugin..
still on the bright side its another reason to pull the engine from the outback and upgrade the bus further _________________ 1988 T25 EJ25 n/a.. it just makes more sense that way.. |

In the US OBD II connectors had to be fitted from MY96 -->. They were not fitted in europe as a rule until MY00, although I have seen strange 1998 harness which had one, despite being pretty much normal EDDM spec apart from that.
I have also just done a harness for a guy in Cornwall with an MY98 EJ20. At first glance appeared to be US spec - complete with the ECU with a 96 pin blue connector, and all the US spec fuel tank pressure and temperature sensors and solenoids (the signals for all of which have to ne faked to con the ECU into thinking everything is still there. However, it was right hand drive. I have no idea where electrically US spec RHD's were built for, but did manage to find a wiring diagram for it.
In terms of aftermarket ODB II diagnostic tools, European Subaru's were not fully compliant with the OBD II standards until 2002 or 2003, and this meands that the generic aftermarket code readers do not wirk on them. I have tried two of the hand held 'multimeter type' Chinese ones after being assured that they would work on 2000 model Subaru's. Neither did, and both got sent back, but not until I'd tried them on a Vauxhall and a Seat and updated their firmware too. Neither worked on anything I tried. In contrast the Scangage is excellent - but it still won't talk to European spec ECU's before about 2002 or 2003. _________________ Regards,
