There doesnt seem to be any info on this conversion?
VR6 lumps are fairly simple, sound good and are cheap.
I did see a beetle running one once, but after hours of search button clicking I cant find any info.
Does anyone have any links of anything which may be of intrest to me? |

You can get an adaptor plate from kennedy engineering or I think you canb use a south african T25 audi 5 pot bellhousing on a bay box to bolt it together.
Its not an uncommon conversion on T25's, I fancy an audi V8 in mine.
What years the bug, I wouldn't want to do this to my '50, I assume it's not a 49? Although feel free to chuck the old engine my way if it is!

Your biggest problem is room.
I have looked at doing it and it will stick out the back of the bug a fair way.
I am currently fitting a 4pot mk2 golf engine in and its been no end of headache trying to get it to clear, the 16v is a nightmare with the manifold and the vr6 is no better, you have to cut the firewall out and move it into the car by at least 10" to clear all the camchain stuff on the gearbox end. You'll also need to think majorly about gearbox, apparently most bug gearboxes are only rated to 150bhp and the VR6 starts at 174bhp with that much raw grunt on tap you'll end up eating gearboxes fairly quickly unless you get a majorly upgraded one.
A possibly better way of doing it would be to loose the rear seats and use a stock VR6 box.
I agree its a sound of beauty but its a real bugger to fit because of its size! _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!

Hi all im still looking in to the VR6 in a bug option.
I did see a picture on VZi of one, but can no longer find it.
So i know its possible to do, there must be someone out there who has done it or knows some info on it.??? |

on VZi there was a chap who had a properly modified beetle shell to take the mk3 golf VR6 subframe/gearbox etc, which in my opinion seems propably the best way to go.
I am finding it really difficult to hide the fact I have a 4pot golf lump in the back of a beetle connected to a stock bus box, a VR6 you have 6 more cylinders and a lot more weight.
The point being for the power/weight you really want a different engine configuration eg stock golf box and mid mount it.
They sound lovely but are heavy.
174bhp out the factory for most of them 190bhp for the corrado 12vs, if you were to get a 1.8T golf/audi motor I think the later ones are all aluminium blocks making them alot lighter and then starting bhp is 150, 180 in the audi and available in 225bhp in the TT, factory options that arent so old or heavy these days.
I'm going down the more budget route and myself twice have wanted a vr6, but instead have started building up a cheap 8v GTi engine, with a planned N/A output of 140bhp, maybe if i get my act together turbo to 200bhp which in standard beetle configuration will be an insane handful!
I guess to some extent when you still want to do it and want more info, you have to ask what info you need. generally you need an adaptor plate from kennedy engineering and the skills to fabricate or know someone whos will to help you with it. _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!

Yeh I have thought about using the subframe, but its not really what id prefer to do.
Im not fussed about trying to hide the fact this will have something much bigger than the original flat 4. Id be happy running with out a deck lid, or have to adapt one to fit.
I understand the VR6 is heavy, but again the whole idea is not really about performance or handeling. It more just the fact Id like to give it a go, simply as ive only ever seen one done before.
My wifes got the 1.8T 225 TT, but I dont think she be to happy if i borrowed the engine
And im not really after turbo power. Ive had a gut full of turbos. My last 7 cars have been turbo. hence why id like to do "something different".
I sold my Mk2 GTI golf with a VR6 in it about 18 months ago. And whilst I agree it didnt handel very well and wasnt actually thats fast (Ive had all sorts like 300bhp escort cossie)......and the fuel comsumption was poor for the power.
BUT
The sound was just sooooooo good.
I have 2 bugs at the mo, but am selling both. The 'VR6 bug' will litterally be a bit of fun taking it to local meets and a few local shows, thats all.
Ive restored all sorts from my 1949 beetle, to sierra cosworth, to an Aston martin DBs, so id like to think im competent enough to under take a VR6 instal in a bug.
The bug I have in mind although early 50's, has already been choped about and missing the fire wall for a scooby conversion.
Do Kennedy have a website?
Yes as you say I need more specific questions, mainly the adapter plate and the clutch/flywheel configuration.
I dont suppose you have the VZi link, as i cant seem to find it?
Thanks |
