oh yeah! i'm using a 4-speed box from my 2.0 lawn mower also :/
or should i get a good 2nd hand 5speed
the scooby swap seems to have alot of love from people anthoer plus point is that it sounds sort of vw-ish
i've been toying the idea of the pug 2.1 but i dont know if its a turbo diesel :?
& phil seems a hard man to find
time of converting & cost is a consideration also |

| i dont know what mpg they give but i have a rover tomcat turbo engine in full working order with a t28 turbo on it from a newer nissan 200sx, nearly 200bhp as standard, this one is 245bhp so would be nice in the van but not sure how economical it would be :/ |

If you can try and get 2litre gearbox from a bay-they have the same top and bottom gears as the t25 5 speed boxs. They are still 4 speed but all the linkages line up in the right place unlike the t25 which is side shift. _________________ www.faltownskateboards.com |

he has a T25 surely that would just be silly...
I'd stick with yer 4 speed I doubt you'd gain much if anything with the 5 speed box just have to change gear more often.. pretty sure your 4th is much the same as 5th on a 5 speed. _________________ 1971 Devon Bay with 1800 Ford Turbo Diesel Engine (wip)

So if i was to conver to a diesel i'd just need the diesel bellhousingsump & oil pump????
i was looking at the bay window on the completed conversions section with the golf (90bhp) & its done with mostly t25 parts? although i dont want to have fly-by-wire throttle could i use a diesel pump from an VW LT???
i'm drawn to a 2.1 pug turbo diesel but famous phill is hard to get hold of, i'd have one of his complete kits & go pug with underslung rad as ihave a set of twin fans & adjustible thermostat in my garage doing nothing!
what route do you think is best for me chaps as i dont really want to use the old aaz as its a bit long in the tooth to me!
whats the next engine, i got a bit lost with all the vw engine codes if i'm honest!!!! i'd like proboly 120bhp is that too much to ask, something i can just sit at 75-80 comfortably & a quick busrts to 85-90 now & again
i did 95 with the wind behind me going down hill on on the m6 in my 2.0 petrol lawn mower a week ago i was seriously suprised, only for about a 1/4 of a mile though then back on on the inside at 65 till i got home, got some good looks from ppl in cars with far superiour engines lol
i'm just after something that does'nt feel like its stretched at 80-90 if you get my meaning! |

buy a t4 if you want that sort of speed surely. i am building a 1971 bay using kennedy adapter, starter, flywheel etc, 091 box with reworked fourth gear and rebuild by cogbox, and an aaz charge cooled turbo diesel. but i am only truely aiming for 70 mph cruising. i think a lot of people out there have dodgy speedos. 70 mph (real speed) is quite fast in reality and most old vw speedos will read about 85 at that speed. i wouldnt want to go much faster as your not far away from the windscreen and the crumple zone is your leg. _________________ most bad experiences ive had included cars that werent german. never again |

ooohhhh knoqw i dont want a modern vw lol i like the vw's with the motor in the back!
it'll be sat at 70mph cruise 99.8% of the time! i just want to try to choose a motor that'll have a little left in reserve to get you out of the odd scenario when you need a burst of power
i'm not really knocking the aaz i'm sure they are a good motor!!!!!! it would'nt be considered if it was poo! but they are popular as far as i can see so cant be too bad,i dont know what power/torque the aaz has stock?
i'm open to all opinions on what too use but i think i do want to go turbo diesel! |

To be honest i think 120bhp from one of the older diesels is a bit of an ask although they can(ive heard) be tuned up to those types of figures...however 120bhp isnt the whole story. in A van decent torque is as important as BHP.
if your set on 120 bhp ish i think youll have to bite the bullet and go for a more modern diesel and all the elctrical gubbins that comes with it. Or go for the more trodden route of the petrol conversions like the subaru.
I dont know the stats for the Pugs but if thats what you really want then i would wait out until phils about again....
something else to bear in mind is that if you go powerful diesel gearing will be very important to making the most of the 120bhp.
Not saying that any of this cant be done and dont mean to be negative but I think 120bhp, economy, cheap conversion, simple engine/non fly by wire etc etc might be a bit of moon on a stick... I would assess which of those factors are most important to you really and go from there. |

right i think i've come to a decision!!!!
i'd like to go down the route of the pug 2.1 turbo diesel so i need to get hold of famous phil for the kit to convert! how do i get hold of him or anyone else that does the kit?
i've a mate that has said that the pug engine is fairly easy to get some more reliable hp out of & it should affect the mpg, consisting of a little more boost & fuel!
i feel the torque of the 2.1 should be good on my 82 devon & give it a decent cruising speed!
so now i've made the decision has anyone thats got a pug disel engine got any hints tips or advice on what'll be the pain in the arse of doing this conversion?
i have the tools, i have enough knowlwdge & fab skillz, i may need a hand from anyone in the midlands that have a little time to give a hand when i'm struggling
plz advize chaps/chics
big thanks to the chaps that set up this forum! this may make my bus the bus i wanted which i suppose in some ways is oldschool style with semi-modern power/econamy!
hope my t25 earbox is geared ok for the pug 2.1TD????
YA A BIG HELP CHAPS |
