71 bay ej22 engine

i was just popping down to tesco to get some bread and just as i got there my trusty bus stopped . it just cut out. i tried to start it and it was firing then cutting straight out (chiccy boom -stop, chiccy boom -stop).
pushed it into the petrol station put some petrol in it (even though it showed quarter of a tank) chiccy boom- stop chiccy boom -stop???
pushed it out of everyones way sprayed some injector cleaner into the airflow meter and it fired up straight away???
i only have a cone filter on it do you think i need more filtration, could it be that the airflow meter got dirty??

anyway after that everything was fine. got me to tesco and then home without any problems??

what do you guru's think about that then

john

Engine year, convo details?

Have you run diagnostics?
(Green connectors connected, IGN on but not ENG on. Flashing LED shows code)

Mine has a cone filter, works well.

Same here.
This is a new one on me so no idea help

I had a problem last year whilst under full throttle the motor would suddenly die at about 4500rpm, but as you let off it kicked back into life. Scared the poo out of me a couple of times but then it cleared itself and hasn't done it since

sorry its a 1990 non turbo. yeah i did the diagnostics, everything did what it was meant to.
perhaps it did run out of petrol or it sucked a bit of sh!t through the pipe and my gauge is just going mad and it was a coincidence when i sprayed the cleaner in?
i am going over the water to kent (elusive teritory) today so this will be the longest run i done so it should be a good test. (cant wait to go through the tunnel on the way back)
i'll keep you informed.
also the photos will be coming off the camera today so i'll post lots of info

cheers john

generally its a lack of a VSS that causes that one
can also lead to stalling when coming to a stop

What Joel says springs instantly to mind with me. Mine used to cut power when cruising.
Very easily sorted with a VSS unit from Brantz. Few of the AussieVeedubbers are now running them too, Brendan ordered his from the UK!

BUT I don't think a 1990 engine uses this. Might affect Steve's though, around '98 was the turning point for VSS

John, check your fuel filter for crap (technical term)

as far as i am aware i don't have a speed sensor. i will check the fuel filter although it was brand new!?!?!
i took it for a drive today (sounded great through the dartford tunnel) and everything was fantastic. i have the thermostat back in and it stayed at about 85 ish degrees. even when i sat in traffic at tolls the fans didn't come on...cooooool
my heater works well as well. just got to block up a few vents and re route a few pipes to the screen.
defo need a better gearbox. will bigger tyres on back help?
i got 215/45/17 tyres and was thinking 215/55/17 but not sure if this will make any differance.

i have got the bug though i just want to play in/with my van constantly...

Elusive, they all have VSS.
The ECU needs it mainly to map for rolling to a stop with the throttle shut
talking to a bloke here who has a 89 EJ22 in his bay, till he put in the subaru speedo cluster he was having problems with it cutting out when coming to a stop

the late 80s/early 90s ones are inside the speedo cluster
im not sure when but evenutally they were relocated to the gearbox and drove the speedo electronically

ealier engines aren;t as finicky about it
it seems all they do is the rev limiting at speed and stalling when rolling to a stop but later modles can be a real pain in the arse throwing codes and total rev limiting once warm

Cheers for the other info mate.
Talking to Rich (RJES) I believe the UK and Euro domestic market are way behind the "Rest of the World" markets though.

I know the VSS affects the fan operation temp/speed too

I've quoted your bit above as mine chucks a 24 code (IAC) when warm (only when warm) when I coast down in 4th or 3rd,
I still haven't shorted out my gearbox neutral switch which I've been informed cures this.
I regard it as a CEL light's working code Wink

The suggestions above about Cleverchap's engine cutting at 4500 rpm (probably actually 4399 rpm) is definitely one of the symptoms of not having a speed signal input to your ECU. I've never come across any of the symptoms with an engine as early as 1992, but I am not too surprised. The speed sensor info on my site (see http://www.rjes.com/html/vehicle_speed_sensor__vss_.html and http://www.rjes.com/html/vss.html) is a little out of date, as I now know that almost all MY '95 onwards (3 and 1 plug ECU) Subaru's need a speed sensor. I have also found one 'early style' 4 plug Legacy ECU which needed a speed sensor to stop it stalling at junctions. It was from a very late (MY96) EJ22 Legacy.
Some min 1990's 3 plug ECU's always require the neutral switch wire grounding as well as a speed sensor to get everything to work properly. One of the symptoms of this seems to be Elusive's error code 24 with no actual idle problems. The other is ECU's which cut out at every junction, rather than just occasionally, improve a lot when fitting a speed sensor. However, some still cut out occasionally. Grounding the neutral switch wire solves this.
As Joel says, all EJ series onwards Subarus had a speed sensor, so treat running a one without a speed signal input as an experiment. Non of the symptoms of running without one are going to leave you stranded, but all of them will annoy you. If you don't want to treat it as an experiment, or are doing a conversion for a customer, etc, I'd recommend you fit a speed sensor to all Subaru engines.
Also, the Brantz sensors are designed for Ford / Vauxhall speedo cables, and the VW cables do not fit properly without modifications. I stock a similar sensor which is a perfect fit with the --> 1982 VW cables.

For anyone reading abroad, all the above refers to EDM Subaru's. Aussie spec models usually seem to have very similar engine management, but JDM and USDM models from MY95 --> are very different.
