hi, i've just fitted and piped in a second rad to the camper. It comes off the top hose on the engine to the top hose on the second rad then from the bottom hose on the 2nd rad to top hose on the 1st rad. And finally bottom hose on the 1st rad to bottom of engine block.
Can anyone tell my if this is right as when a started the camper some oil came out next to the dip stick. I was told by a friend this is due to air locks and i have to run the engine with the cap off the first rad and top up the water untill all the air is out. Any help would be great. Cheers Nick

Def sounds like it is plumbed correctly (ie in series)... where abouts do you have your rads mounted ?
Is one mounted higher than another ?
Airlocks are often a major problem with these set-ups and I've blown a few hoses off in the past due to this.. I tend to run the engine for a while with the top off the header tank and generally take it easy when I fill the system from empty releasing the header cap often to release any air that might be in the sysetm. I guess another option is to put a bleed screw on the end of your loop somewhere.

What is your engine out of ?

Welcome to VWKD Hello

hello, my engine is out of a seat leon, more or less the same engine as a vw golf. The 1st rad is in the engine bay and worked fine up till 40mph when the air flow was not enough and she would over heat. The second rad is bettween the chasis rails. My friend reckons on running the engine until all the air has got out only prob with this is the pressure its cause is making the oil come out the dip stick. not sure if i would be better just running the rad. Any ideas on that cheers

I have to admit the oil coming out of the dipstick sounds odd almost like your head gasket is gone ! someone else might be able to explain this.

I know quite a few on here and out in Aus run fiine with just the 1 rad mounted between the chasis rails and a scoop set up so I'm wondering if your set up maybe a little overkill would certainly relieve some heat from the engine bay if you were to get rid of your first rad. Also I presume you are just running off the standard water pump and would wonder if this might be struggling to get the water round 2 rads.

Just thinking out loud really.

thats what i was thinking about the gasket but the engine has just been rebuilt and has done no miles really, and worked fine up to 40mph were the rad was before and no signs of the head gone or going.

think i may try using just the one rad and see what thats like. Think you could be right about the water pump. Well i'll give it a go with the one rad tonight.

Does seem strange I have to say.. I reckon if you go back to your orig set up and confirm no oil leakage then switch to running just the new 2nd rad and see how that goes.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Eyup Ned,

You have got blocked crankcase breathers? That's what it sounds like to me.

Yer Ned I run two rads in series that is the correct way and your water pump should be able to manage this with no problems.

If any one is planning on running dual rads it is very important to put them in series-NEVER put them in parrell on a Y piece as this does not work-I speek from experience-very anoying!

Good luck with the breathers fella
