I can see where your coming from....but
you've gone from 1.3 idea to vr ....... BIG jump.. (especially when you want it on the cheapside )
more cash than power in my opinion...ok vr's sound great, but not much power for buck and very heavy...unless charged ( but that's a different story)
ive seen a bug with a g60 engine...very quick
or if you want cheap power, then 18.16v kr lump..lot cheaper than the abf 2.0l and only about 10bhp less.....( will a peugeot dissy help with the space issue?)
but if you can get it then g40........or just a 1.3, spacer gasket and turbo
In your shoes i'd go with the 1.3 turbo idea ......
well funnily enough i have spoted on fleabay a 2.0 8v with a 16v kr head! so im going to keep an eye on that for the time being once the cars all sorted out and totally planned then i'll see about the engine. its not like theres a rush. the 1300 lumps pretty fail safe i think, with the turbo option i might fit a gate to the exhaust so i can bypass the turbo if im cruising down the motorway at 70 and dont want to be in boost, then solenoid activated so i can be turbocharged round town I have some different ideas sometimes _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!

right I have started working on fixing the bug first up had problems with the drain away for some reason and it has the potential to rot the car out
still things have moved on a little in the engine department
the cars not stripped yet because i want to make it back into a daily and see what needs doing handling wise and make sure the cars ok before i start on it.
anyway i have aquired a little better power option today after spotting an engine forsale on ebay that didnt sell and i forgot to bid!
so contacted the guy and he said mine for 60 quid!
its a 2litre 8v bottom end with a 1.8 KR 16v head its basically a stripped engine as in the block with some of the mounts, the guy was planning on building this up to put in his mk3 driver, so hes cleaned everything up cleant the bores and checked them over then lightly coated the insides with valve lube (assembley grease stuff) to keep it from getting any surface rust developing while it was being stored and he was working on it. So theres only one small issue I have to check which is to do with the cam timing, hes been checking it over and said the he used a cam wheel from the 2litre 8v (he still has the head inlet manifold etc so might look out for that when he sells it) which needed to be slightly machined down width wise to fit and he said the timing seems to be about 1/2 tooth/5deg out when hes been trying to time it up.
the odd thing he has done is move the cam tensioner from one side of the head to another because of the offset of the cam, i'm not convinced it makes a difference myself and I'm going to take the cambelt off and start again using my mk3 haynes manual as i think that could be part of the problem tensioning it from the other side. I'm also gonna see why the stock 16v pulley doesnt fit.
so effectively I have something thats 138bhp+ potentially maybe 147bhp, maybe more! and its a good setup from my point of view, the dizzy is mounted in the block and the head mount has had a blanking plate made meaning there shouldnt be any firewall clearance issues (unlike the polo engine i was planning on). The guy was also going to run it on throttle bodies and he got some bike throttle bodies with 230cc injectors i think he said, the TBs seem to normally have 2 sets of butterflys apparently its to make power slightly more progressive on the bike so it doesnt throw you off the back, hes taken the back set out so that only the ones nearest the engine work as a throttle, the TBs also take 2 sets of injectors which he gave me as well. He also started making an aluminium manifold and has got as far as making an alloy flange and cutting 3 out of 4 holes ready for the TBs.
so I think for 60 quid not a bad score!
so in my mind I have a few options, one is to go old school run something like 40s on it and a stock dizzy maybe even hunt down a points dizzy from an earlier golf!
next up, track down a stock 16v GTi manifold/injection system/wiring loom/gubbins so i can run it like a stock 138/147bhp 16v and have the relibiltiy economy of a stock engine thats got plenty of poke (my preffered option)
Finally theres the option of carrying on down the throttle body route, this is gonna end up slightly expencive but nicely programable so i can maybe tune more power out of it!
then theres also the option to bung in a turbo for fun, I mean hey if im gonna pay 65 quid a year more in road tax i might as well have a proper porsche eater! _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!

Well I have changed my mind about this project, mainly because I have too many cars!
basically I have an adaptor plate and a 16v 2litre8v engine chatting to a guy I know who seems pretty hot on his golf stuff he said the combination of a KR16v head on the 2litre 8v block will give lower compression as the 16vs have flat top pistons and the 2litre has dished pistons and i believe hes right too, this then pushes the engine into the slightly more expencive margin because the good option of having lower compression is adding a turbo(or 2!) or a supercharger mean i can squeeze plenty of power out of the engine.
recently over xmas its sort of hit me that i need to stop messing about with my 1303 and just get the thing sold as a standard car so im taking the porsche bodykit off going to put standard wings/bumpers on it MOT it and then sell it as a standard 1303, this will then make some money to go towards my bigger long term project that just gained a new engine, my 1302s!
I fitted the golf engine in the 1302 and have found i needed to cut open part of the firewall because of the head (8v head i wouldnt have had the problem) so I'm glad i didnt try and put it in the 1303.
So the 1303 is to be sold and I shall start a new thread with the 1302s project and how I progress with that as I am now commited! _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!
