Well the adaptor plate (which after several weeks I'm still waiting for) which I'm getting is cast for golf type lay back engine.
I did wonder if I could alter it but then I looked at the pics and realised thats not really a suitable idea because of the way its made, really I could do with getting hold of a lump of alloy and using this as a template!
I know what your saying about the angle thing, another annoyance with the polo engines is the dizzy is on the end of the head, Ideal I dont want to chop a hole in the firewall for it, it would be better if there was another way to have ignition without that sticking out dizzy.
I have been offered an 80s 1300 polo engine for about 30 quid (dont know what the condition/completenss is like but its someone I know, apparently its about 55bhp, how different are the GT engine? I did think a nice renault 5 carb (already jetted for 1400cc) and a small turbo could make a fun engine for minimal work.
The final alternative is if someone can help me track down a really cheap 1500cc engine (petrol or diesel) mainly because its a 74 1303 im playing with the idea of and its 1300 tax group which is £120 a year, ideal I'd like to keep it 65 quid cheaper than my golf by staying under 1500cc. at the same time i need a bit more poke out of it, 1500 diesel wont pull skin of custard according to the book, but if it could be turbo charged I could keep it all nice an economical and not to slow.
as regards to the clutch situation im sure there are plenty of VAG flywheels to go with this, when you bought the adaptor kits originally from cool air a few years back, the flywheel was a audi 80 flywheel with beetle ring gear pressed on, so maybe a local machine shop could do that for me. I dont want to go huge massive complicated, i just want to make my 1303 a bit more practical/daily its got a huge porsche bodykit and has plently of places for a rad without looking out of place! _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!

Looks very similar to a kennedy plate! Maybe an earlier version or a copy. Looks to have been drilled for a 15 deg slant.
Would be interesting to know if the polo engine would fit under a beetle deck lid. def a market for plates as they are great little engines. |

that there does look very similar! although that one looks to have alot more holes! what are all the extra holes for? I'm sure I have seen other versions of this with those extra holes alowing the engine to be mounted at 15 or 50 degrees.
with the polo engine im keen to get my adaptor plate and offer it up before I make a purchase as because of the amount of material on that plate could make it rather difficult to add extra holes without losing strength. The other thing obviously is what 13 window mentionrf about the angle of the engine as the small engines are tilted forward, by the looks of it by 15 degrees the other way so I'm wondering if it would make a whole lot of difference tilting it back the other way or maybe even turning the adaptor plate round.
Someone did say on VZi when I was asking about polo engines that they have possibly a smaller mbolt mounting pattern. I shall need to investigate further! _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!

The adaptor plate I have bought is by the pictures designed for a VAG engine to be fitted at 15 degrees only and only fits the larger VAG engines as in 1.5/1.6/1.8/2.0/Diesels.
Now I was thinking of fitting a 1300 polo engine to keep things cheap (as I know where theres a cheap engine.) but apparently the bolt fixings are different. the VR6 mounts are apparently also different.
I could really do with getting a nice fresh piece of 1" thick alloy so I can use this adaptor plate as a guide/base and then add a selection of other holes to suit other VAG engines!
now on top of the adaptor plate, how did people go about flywheels & clutches? I know that with the bigger VAG engines they use a back to front clutch/flywheel layout thats not suited to beetle/camper gearboxes and some people with other engines use a 200mm beelte centre plate (or bigger if the flywheel will fit) and then pressure plate/flywheel from the doner engine? |
I must admit that when I first saw it
I too thought it was a little thin
But think about it
What forces are acting on the plate?
The rotation of the engine as a twisting force
There are no forces pushing the engine and gear box apart
So there for I do not see the need of something 10 mm thick
After all it is only there to line up a few bolts and as long as there are at least 2 bolts going through both engine and gear box it will never come apart
Well I hope mine does not
And as mine has the starter mounted to the plate as well it just shows how strong a bit of 5 mm steel is

i have seen distributors reversed before (ie facing back towards the engine)mounted on a alloy plate bolted to the original dissy mountings on both a opel kadet and vauxhall manta with red top 20xe engines to avoid cutting the bulkhead the one i saw used a tiny toothed belt like a cam belt and 2 alloy gears seemed to work a treat, maybe you could investigate this? or use a distibutor bevel gear like on a suzuki sj jeep these were fitted to the sj to fit the dissy at 90 degrees to avoid the bulkhead as it was the same motor as a swift but on the swift it was on staright over the gearbox as the engine was transveresly mounted _________________ 1964 rat 13 window deluxe 1Z tdi,
