just about to start the conversion on my oval
im scared about cutting the firewall - is this a must do modification
ive already cut from the firewall back so theres no clearance issues with the sides of the motor but ive seen a lot of pictures of conversions and the whole fire wall has been hacked to pieces
any help would be much loved |

not sure about a 2.2 non-turbo, my bug needed the firewall removing to make room for the intercooler on the turbo motor (and was rotten anyway), but you wont have that problem. not sure what other clearence issues you'll have at the back of the engine though.
you'll probably have to move the gearbox forward an inch to prevent you having to cut the rear wings as well.
any ideas what gearbox/conversion combo you'll be going for? as that will determine how much room you need as well. _________________ '72 Ratty Bug - Subaru EJ20 Turbo motor. |

im guessing if the gearbox goes forward then i will definatly have to cut the fire wall
ive got an oval beetle and im very reluctant to cut away metal on the firewall as its totally orignal and totally rust free
gearbox wise im just going with a standard swingaxle at the moment and when it dies ill go for a built box ive already got rhino mounts fitted and a hd bar
do i have to flip water pipes round etc i saw them on the rjes site |

yeah coolant inlet manifol needs to be cut up and reversed to keep the install tidy. Richard at rjes does them on an an exchange basis i believe though. _________________ '72 Ratty Bug - Subaru EJ20 Turbo motor. |

Just in case you didn't know allready: You can't move a swingaxle gearbox forward. _________________ homepage

ah good point. might be worth you measuring up (or looking at other conversions) in that case to check if you'd have clearence behind the wings. _________________ '72 Ratty Bug - Subaru EJ20 Turbo motor. |

ive definatly got clearance behind the wings - if not ill just cut them up
ive cut the inner wings back from the firewall all the way back to the rear valance so thats no biggy
was just worried about the firewall - ill just have to cross my fingers |

There is no need to cut the firewall at all if you use a throttle body reverser to get the induction system out of the way:
http://www.rjes.com/html/throttle_body_reverser__-_99_.html
The throttle body reverser pictured is intended for bays and splitties. It will clear the firewall in a beetle, and positions the throttle body above the coils. I am not sure whether this would cause a problem with engine lid clearance in a beetle (the throttle body itself will clear, but maybe there would not be enough room to get a pipe to your air flow meter on it). If you want to buy one and try it, if the throttle body would be better turned 90 degrees (so it's parallel with the firewall), I'd cut and turn it for you for free if you sent it back and paid for the return postage. _________________ Regards,

A reversed coolant manifold is not essential for a conversion. It depends how neat you want your plumbing to be, assuming that your radiator will be in front of the engien (not that there is much choice in a Beetle). Without one your coolant outlet (not inlet, as someone mentioned above), will point vaguely in the direction of the LH rear light. With one, it will be along side the starter motor.
