|
|
ok my starter died this morning on the bus along with some other problem, the cable from the motor to the solinoid has burnt through, the guy from the RAC said it didnt sound like it was turning over that fast before it burnt through but it never seems to.
so the Question is what else can I replace it with and how do I do it?
Tdi golf mk3?
VR6? that looks similar to the TDi one
theres an auto one which seems to have less depth to the the gear end
not long till vanfest and a million other things to do, help much appreciated! _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!

you can use one of the tdi starters as the cog and everything line up nicely, its also geardrive so really powerfull.
Go along to a good starter moter rebuild place with yours and take a look at the tdi ones
You'll need to fill and redrill the mounting holes slightly but thats fairly easy. Don't be tempted to take it apart and ali weld it as its a right pain, I used arraldite and its still going fine!

Well there are 2 TDi type starters, the first one I aquired I think is the type you speak of, the second one has a longer nose to it as per 13 window deluxes conversion, the advantage that 13 deluxes conversion is the fact you can use a standard TDi starter with no mods as you use an adaptor plate instead, this way if it ever breaks down then you dont need to alter any new one you get. _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!

I noticed that post after I replied to you
He should set a small batch run as you could use them on any hard to turn conversion or even hi po vw motor

nope, I have a t25 diesel engine/bell housing in my bay.
I actually made an adaptor plate as well to fit the golf 3 TDi (long nose) starter to a T25 bell housing.
I used a piece of aluminium 12.7mm thick ( i think it could be a tiny bit thinner) with a 75mm hole ( i used a 76mm hole saw!) in the middle, takes a tiny bit of planning but its not to hard to make.
using even a 45ah battery to spin the engine over is miles better than the 70ah one I had on the van when the old starter died. _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!

O.k. my modified T25 starter has given up the ghost, so I thought I would join the club and make up an adaptor to use a modern tdi starter.
Can anyone suggest a suitable starter, part number or model of car?
13 windows deluxe and bugsy malone I guess this question is really for you.
Thanks

Most importantly is that it looks like this:
There are 2 different types of tdi starter on the mk3 golf/etc and the other type that I know of (that I bought in error!) has a shorter nose.
By using this type with the longer nose (as pictured) and a 12.7mm thick piece of aluminium works a treat, I think theres pictures in my Bay TD build of how my adaptor looked when I was done.
after 2 years and probably 3k+ (I dont use the van everyday as I have a new tdi for a daily ) I havent had any issues. _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!

Got my starter today it's a 02A911024X, and is a long nose type.
From my measurements of flange positions, pinion length and throw, I reckon a 10mm flat spacer should work with a 76mm hole. Where did you get your counter sink M12 bolts?
Cheers all the help.
