|
|
So far generally speaking apart from the TDi baja on here, I have mostly seen subaru engine in beetles, occasionally an odd alfa but not much else?
with the vans a bigger engine bay means alsorts is being stuck in them, but no much in the way of beetles.
I been thinking my 1302 needs a TD engine now when its built, i was gonna build a twin turbo 1600 air cooled lump with a few tricks but I started thinking i want a hot rod that i can use as my daily driver again, which made me think i need economy from the beetle, a subaru engine wont help much i dont think, but diesel well _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!

So you'd like:
1/ Scooby performance
2/ Diesel economy

well yeah but no but yeah but no but lol
I'm after Economy & better than stock 1600 performance.
so like the Td is 75bhp-90bhp out of a golf, well that would be quicker and embarress a few people.
also im tempted to build something crazy and cooled by air, tatra crazily enough still build lorries with air cooled diesels and they meet the latest emission standards too!
at 12.6 litres though i wont get it in the back of the beetle lol _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!

I'm just not keen on subarus. Sure the sound ok, and 39mpg doesnt sound bad but if you have to add all the extra wiring and ECU in is alot of work compared to an agricultural diesel that can get about 50mpg and run on veg oil too. no wiring involved either as I found with my install on the bus of the N/A 1600 D. Its only when you go and get the later 90bhp lumps is there minmal wiring, but still get one of the early 75bhp ones and do a bit of tuning and theres more powerful, i understand these are tunable to about 230bhp there is a rumour of! _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!

sounds like you answered your own question then.....
If you want just economy then sounds like TDI is the way although you could choose any hi po engined Petrol and add LPG...Rotaries, subarus, volvo t5 have all been done!
TBH though if you dont want devastatin performance but economy is the way 90 bhp ish will feel more than enuf in a beetle!
i think those performance claims relate to the later PD engines. |

no no, it was something on vwaudiforum posted on a thread about a guy who tuned 260bhp out of a PD engine, it was another guy who said about the 230bhp out of a mechanical diesel!
shocking stuff really!
I think what i was getting at is you dont see much in the way of MPG motors in beetles but you see tons in buses. _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!

If you're really looking at economy bear in mind that "Aga fuel" (appols JP ) is now about 15-20% more than petrol.
Therefore going diesel (unless you're doing WVO) is roughly (say) 40mpg is 33mpg (petrol) on spends.
How's about lobing a wasserboxer in the back? Ian Ambrose has it sorted on that.
Now balance up that a 'modified vw" engine will prolly cost you nothing more on insurance a year - scooby (for example) might load you with an additional £100.
Weigh up your mileage/insurance/tax options and then smile, knowing you've made the right choice - for you.
BTW if you didn't know already my daily is a '75 1200DL bug with a 1600 mower in the back. There's nothing wrong with 'em, 'cept it's cold in the winter! _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.
