Thanks to everyone that replied to my 1.8 golf engine topic....
going by peoples resoponses and from what i have read elsewhere, I am going for an AAZ conversion.
Managed to pick up an engine from a golf for good money and that arrives in a few weeks... so now i need to sort out mounting the thing..
I am going to mount at 15 degrees to save having to swap sump etc
most people seem to have an adapter plate from kennedy eng which comes as a kit..
can anyone tell me the difference between the flywheel in the kit, the original t25 petrol flywheel and the flywheel on my golf aaz engine ? |

I'd imagine the main differences between the KEP flywheel and the T25 flywheel would be depth and the clutch. The KEP plate is designed to either run a 228mm clutch or a 200mm clutch (depending on the kit) from beetles/vans.
The AAZ flywheel is complately different. it's tricky to explain but the set up is effectively in reverse. with the pressure plate nearest to the engine as opposed to the flywheel being nearest to the engine.
as per this photo. |

thanks for the reply !! looks like i'm just going to have to pay out the money and buy the KEP kit... was hoping that i could machine up my own adapter plate and then modify one of my existing flywheels....
guess the KEP kit isn't too bad value really when you consider it all bolts together perfect with no messing about...
I have never seen one up for sale, but if anybody does have a KEP kit to put an aaz in to a t25 petrol bus that they want to sell, i would be very interested!

interesting that you mention the AAZ having a different clutch set up....
ive just bought a 1.6TD (JX) t25 which (if i can find a cheap enough donor) i will be AAZ ing. i know you have to swop a lot of stuff across from the JX inlet manifold etc etc but havent come acorss any info yet that suggested the flywheel would need swopping. Am i getting my wires crossed or should i be swopping the Flywheel too? Im sure all will becme clear when i actually have an engine.
Ivor...have i miseed something or is there a reason your not doing the diesel bellhousing conversion? surely that would be the easiest way forward?
once ive finished with my numerous dismantled engines in a few weeks i will prbably have the sump, engine mounts and a whole load of other JX TD stuff up for sale (i have two knackered engines) |

| not too sure about swapping the flywheels? I'd imagine the depth would be the same, it's more the difference in the clutch release mechanism? I can't remember if it's a push or a pull system - i think it's a push so you might be able to keep the whole aaz clutch/flywheel. |

| and you'll be in the money with the JX td stuff! probably a better investment than a couple of drums oil! |

only reason i was going KEP route is becuase i had no idea where to source the vw diesel bell housing, altered oil pickup and sump from....
really on a tight budget so i'm sort of not set on any particular method of mounting the aaz yet, just see what comes out cheapest..
I'm finding it very hard to work out what I need when i havn't even seen my aaz up clopse yet.... trying to get as many opinions and as much advice as possible... |

if you have a jx van or all the jx van bits the aaz engine will bolt straight in put the jx flywheel and clutch on the aaz engine and bolt it in using jx mounts qand if you use a jx turbo on the aaz engine you can use the jx oil drain pipe. you dont need to make any bits just use all stock bits the golf aaz flywheel is no good for any gearbox except golf 020 front wheel drive reverse acting type _________________ 1964 rat 13 window deluxe 1Z tdi,

kep is hardly the cheapest route you could buy a complete t25 jx van for the price of a kep 228mm clutch and flywheel kit then you need a high torque starter motor on the top of that! _________________ 1964 rat 13 window deluxe 1Z tdi,

I've been a watercooled diesel nut for a while, had a couple of AAZ's and a 1.6GTD which I was planning on putting in my caddy.
Lately the caddy's been neglected and I've spent a lot more time in my bug (stock 1300 '72) thinking "Man I wish this was as reliable as the caddy..."
Any info you need on the AAZ you can ask me, I've got one sitting in my lounge and one in the garage lol.
I don't know whether to start my own thread or not but I'm basically looking for similar info only my conversion is AAZ into a bug.
Would it not be as simple for you as to getting a diesel T25 gearbox and bolting that up to the AAZ? Then all you'd need to worry about is the oil pickup pipe?
Would this also be a solution for myself, if I were to be able to mount the diesel T25 gearbox to the mount on my bug (fabrication, conversion kit?) |

Hi Andy, Greetings from Ireland.
Re: 1.6td JX to AAZ.
Can I use the jx pump and jx turbo and exhaust manifold on the aaz? Some say I have to use the aaz pump and it looks totally different..
If I use the jx pump do I use the jx injectors and pipes also? and finally do you keep the t25 pulley set up or use the newer serpentine pully set up? The aaz is from an '95 vento td.
Many thanks Paul. |
