Turbo into bay isn't the most straight forward conversion. How early is your early bay - specifically, does it have the extra chassis cross member under the rear of the fuel tank which supports rubber mounts to the bell housing?
You basically have a choice:
Chop the bus around a lot to fit the turbo and intercooler in their original positions, which will involve moving the fuel tank too. I my opinion this is often bit of a lash up, as what you enf up with is far from ideal any way (either a reduced fuel capacity - you'll need more, or loss of storage space, a non ideal intercooler location, etc, unless you go to the extremes of drastic modifications to the whole bus anyway, as Rich Baker is on here, in shich case it's just another bit of major bodywork surgery.
The better option is to re-engineer the exhaust and induction so it fits in your near standard bus. This would involve reversing either the entire inlet manifold or just the throttle body (depending on the age of the engine), and relocating the turbo and intercooler.
This option does give you the choice of positioning the intercooler somewhere where it stands a chanve f getting a bit of air flow through it too, but replacing it with an air to water one if your turbo engine does not already have one would be a good idea too. There is no way you cab get rid of enough heat with a rear mounted air ro air intercooler for it to work efficiently, especially it it's where Subaru intended. With an air to water one you can put it wherever is neatest and hives the shortest boost pipes without having to worry about getting air flow through it, but you do have the extra hassle of installinga pump and radiator.
You may be able to get away with reversing the standard exhaust manifold and maning a new manifold to turbo pipe by modifying the Subaru up pipe, although you'd have to fit a remote oil filter (and possibly cooler too) to do this. I have a customer doing it this way at the moment, as he doen't want to modify his bay more than necessary.
Although they are not yet on my web site, I have all the engine mounting parts available for bays now, as well as parts to reverse the inlet manifold / throttle body, and lots of other parts. I can do all the wiring work etc. if required too. The main bits you'd need to come upo with yourself id the exhaust and inlet plumbing and radiator installation.

i think Rich has summed it up pretty well...but just a few additional points in case you set on staying with the turbo as it:
The turbo fouls on the firewall as mentioned - in my case i had other reasons to move the fuel tank up and forward- but theres no need to get this drastic - you can move the tank forward and up slightly within its esixting housing to create enough clearance (this is how TSR do it i believe) however my concern (aside from the mention of it looking liker a bit of a lash up as Rich mentions) in doing this is heat soak from the turbo - that sadi there are busses driving about like this.
Unless you are fixed on the rear exhasut the easy option for the exhasut is to go forwards and then side exit....again i have done this as i was able to easily retain the original turbo position.
Re intercooler - bin it and use a chargecooler. in a bus you cannot get the airflow required for an efficient intercooler especially with the heat generated from the turbo. I will be mounting two small motorbike rads in the old rear vents to provide cooling for the chargecooler. |

Everyone seems to be asking how hard it is to fit turbo engines into a bay this week!
Chexk http://www.vwrx.com/index.php?pg=projects for something similar to what I consider to be the best way to do it. It's in a T25 (so much less space above the engine), but you'll get the idea. Basically move the turbo to behind the engine instead of in front.
Either by using a throttle body reveser or maybe reversing the whole inlet manifold, it ought to be possible to come up with something similar without the turbo or intercooler system fouling anything in a bay.
I agree with Rich Baker about turbo / fuel tank proximity - I wouldn't want anything which can glow red hot anywhere near my fuel tank on a conversion of mine. I'm sure it'd be OK with a few heat shields, etc, but I had a breater pipe come off my bay tank years ago. Petrol poured out, right where the turbo would be. _________________ Regards,

Put yer tank under the back seat out of harms way like Neil-C has done on his splitty

what Jp suggests is an easier option for sure - although you wouldnt be able to use the subaru tank due to its weird shape. A custom tank or a modified donor tank (maybe like i have done with my van tank) would be a good plan.
i guess its all down to what you find easiest and how much fabrication you want to do. what RJEs suggests is a little simpler as it can be done on the bench but i suspect it may be a bit more expensive. what i have done takes a lot of fabrication and time....but is cheap. |

that is another good option, but.... how much does that compromise on space for stowage when using the bus as a camper? It's something i need to know as my bus will need to be useable for camping as well to accommodate me n my 2 kids. And anyone who has kids will understand how much gumpf they need  _________________ slide in, life is short. |
