| I am assuming the bellhousing will fit a T25 gearbox, my question is about converting my tired 1.6TD and the suitability of the attached gearbox to the 2.2 legacy engine, in regards to ratios, would I need to get the final drive changed, or would a different box be better? |

| You really need a petrol engine gearbox, i converted my turbo diesel to 2.2 subaru and got rid of the 5 speed box and installed a 4 speed from a late 1.9 dg engine spec van, what a pleasure it was to use a 4 speed no more cranky dog leg into second gear. I converted my van into petrol engine spec, relocated battery up front, complete 4 speed gear linkage and stick housing and fuel injected petrol tank. If you want a run down of how its done just ask. cheers simon.......... |

I must admit that I find the 5 speeder difficult to operate, located in Cockermouth, cumbria.
I just figured that the linkage and the lever mechanism needs rebuilding on the 5 speed, is the 4 speed much easier to operate? |

to far for me im in suffolk ,but the easiest way if you can is to get a 4 speed box and all the linkage all the way to the gear knob _________________ vwdrc AE rep

firstly the bodywork needs sorted, but I already have an subaru 2.2 engine, from an auto with 90k miles on it, just need the flywheel/clutch and the conversion kit and now a good 4 speed petrol box, I am probably going to fit a new tank |

Ratio wise, some of the 1.6 TD boxes are not too bad (ASR, ASS, AAS), and other are somewhere in the middle (ABH, ABS). Some have the same ratio's as petrol boxes. It's the non turbo diesel boxes which are tenmd to have unsuitable ratios. See http://www.rjes.com/html/gearbox_types.html for more details.
Personally, I really don't like the dog leg 5 speed shift pattern. If you don't mind it, and the shift is just difficult, rebuild the linkage and gearlever, and it will probably make a massive difference.
I speak to a lot of people who think they want to convert theitr 4 speeds to 5 speed. When I ask why, thye usually assume that the 5 speed will give them lower rpm in top gear. This is not the case. Almost all the 5 speeds have the same ratio for 5th as a similar spec 4 speed will have for 4th. It's the final drive ratio which makes the majority of the difference to the rpm. Therefore the 5 speeds are effectively a close ratio box. If you have more power than the engines VW fitted, you probably don't want a close ratio box. You'll just be changing gear all the time.
1st in some of the 5 speed boxes is pretty much useless once you have more than say 130 bhp - they pull away in 2nd exactly as you'd expect in first. Ignoring 1st has the nice advantage of converting the shift to a conventional H pattern! _________________ Regards,
