|
|
Hello guys!
This will be my first post in this forum!
I am going to put a SVX engine into my Vanagon and thought therefore
to take this opportunity to upgrade the gearbox.
I would like to change the gearing to fit the engine a little bit
better. Reasonable between gears 1-4 and a 5 that I can get down the
engine rpm when driving on highway. I have heared that 1th to 4th is
better to have too short than to long because strain the engine at low
speeds is not good for it.
The engine is going to be chipped, E85 converted and forged pistons to
increase compression from 10:1 to 11:1, and performance camshafts from http://www.ecutune.com/ will be mounted.
The tyres on the car is 235/45R17 prevosly there were orginal 185/75R14.
The gearbox, which I will start from is a AAP, which Mr. Mechanic in
Västervik/Sweden will prepare for me. I have got a torsen LSD that
will be installed also.
AAP-box sitting in most 2wd Vanagons (Caravelles) with DJ-engine at
112hp sold here in Sweden.
Some information of transmissions and their gearings in T3s:
http://www.t3-infos.de/images/T3-Getriebe.pdf (I´ve got the AAP).
What they have told me to do is this:
Switching the crown wheel and piniong to a ratio of 29:7.
Install the ”South African oil blades” in the gearbox which will
lubricate the 4th and 5th gear a little bit better.
Changing the gear ratio of 5th gear to 0.78.
Install better bearings in the box.
Is there anything else that I maybe perhaps should do with the
transmission? Such as change the gearing in 1th to 4th gear also or
will the original gearing work?
There's some candy here: http://www.vw-winkler.de/index.php/cat/c23_Gear-conversion.html/XTCsid/ce1e39952a175d5e0ece9f5961352bb9 and here also: http://www.t3-total.de/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=37&Itemid=2
I´m also a little bit worried about the lubrication will not be adequate at
1th to 3th gear because the oil blades is only for the 4th and 5th
gear, is my concern justified?
I don´t know nothing about transmissions, but I want to keep it
working until the day you can get a model year 2010 and later 6-speed
Subaru Gearbox (with cables that control the shifting) at a junkyard
and modify to suit the car. _________________ SVX Power! |

| Dont even use the 5 speed , get an early 2 litre 4 speed gearbox. I have almost finished my svx engine conversion and have used the lawn mower 2 litre box but changed the input shaft to an RJES shaft so i can use the complete subaru turbo clutch set up. A 5 speed gearbox does not mean you have an extra gear and that dogleg change into second gear is pants ! . |

You mean a transmission from an air cooled T3? _________________ SVX Power!

| Gearbox to use is DK code 4 speed used in T3 from 1980 - 1982 . You will need to use the rear gear shift rod that operated the earlier T3 gearbox. RJES sell a gearbox mount to move the gearbox backwards to fit the engine correctly. The early 2 litre DK gearbox is stronger than the later watercooled types on the gear changing parts in the box. Have you already modified the engine, do you really need to , it has 230 bhp in its standard form ! . |

Howdy!
Same Sven as at the Swedish forums.
Many guys are using the standard gearbox as is, I would go with it until it breaks. If it breaks. |

Tjena!
I have 3 gearboxes and I think all of them are AAP.
Maybe I should put one in unmodified and then modify one of the others alongside. And maybe in the future change to an other more robust transmission.
I guess I have to drive like the transaxel was made of glass until then.
I don´t really feel comfortible with only 4 gears because I want to use the car regulary an not just for mischief. _________________ SVX Power! |

| The EG 33 engine has so much torque you could use a 3 speed gearbox ! If you stick with the 5 speed just start off in second gear, then theres no dog leg to deal with. |

I think I will use a gearbox from a Renault Espace 2.8 liter V6 microbus before 1996. _________________ SVX Power! |

If u was to do it all all again then I would choose to use the Subaru box with the Subarugears conversion. No need for an adaptor plate, cable shifter available, plenty of gears and diffs to choose from and they can handle plenty of power too. _________________ Think......
